Anna Madely

IĀ amĀ a registered midwife with extensive experience as a senior leader in both clinical practice and education. I studied Evidence-Based Healthcare at the University of Oxford, focusing on research design, medical statistics, diagnostics, and qualitative methods. My MSc explored midwives’ experiences of supporting women with complex needs who choose home birth, using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA).Ā

My PhD applied constructivist grounded theory to examine how women make non-normative maternity decisions—whether declining recommended care, requesting non-indicated interventions, or stepping outside social norms. The study revealed how maternity services shape choices, with implications for strategy, policy, and guidance.Ā

I peerĀ review forĀ several journals,Ā sitĀ on the editorial boards of two leading UK midwifery journals, and have published a book with another in development.Ā

My research interests include qualitative research and systematic review methods (meta-synthesis, meta-ethnography, IPA and grounded theory), midwifery across its full scope, reproductive justice, ethics and choice, complex care planning, home birth, institutional and reproductive human rights, midwifery education and pedagogy, simulated home birth, critical thinking, knowledge translation, and decision-making in childbearing.Ā
