Putting the experience into words feels almost impossible. The opening ceremony of the ICM Congress 2026 was powerful, emotional, and deeply unifying. From the outset, global leaders in maternity care from the UK, Bangladesh, Portugal, Switzerland, and beyond took to the stage with honesty and courage. No issue was avoided. They spoke openly about conflict, climate change, workforce shortages, and racism, reminding us that while we come from 194 different countries, we are connected by shared challenges and a common purpose.

As a student, it was both humbling and inspiring to witness these conversations. There was a clear sense that this generation of midwives must be prepared not only to provide care, but to advocate for change on a global scale.

The highlight for many was the flag ceremony. One by one, countries processed into the room, waving their flags proudly as the audience erupted in cheers. The atmosphere was electric full of pride, solidarity, and belonging. Many, including myself, were visibly moved.

A particularly touching moment came when Anna Af Ugglas invited applause for colleagues who could not attend, those facing visa barriers, funding challenges, or staying behind to care for women who need them most.

This is a moment I will never forget. šŸŒā¤ļø
