Argyro Syngelaki

Dr. Argyro Syngelaki is a Specialist Consultant Midwife in Fetal Medicine at the Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine, King’s College Hospital, London, UK, and an Honorary Reader in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at King’s College London. She is also the Lead for Research and Innovation for Women’s Health at King’s College Hospital and serves as an expert member of the UK National Research Ethics Committee.

Argyro studied Midwifery in Greece and her journey in fetal medicine began in 2008 when she joined Professor Kypros Nicolaides’ team at King’s College Hospital. With a deep passion for improving pregnancy outcomes, she completed a fellowship in Fetal Medicine, supported by the Fetal Medicine Foundation. Alongside her clinical and research work, she pursued two PhDs-one from Utrecht University, The Netherlands, exploring the impact of diabetes and obesity in pregnancy, and another from Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, focused on screening for pregnancy complications at 11-13 weeks’ gestation.

Throughout her career, Argyro has been driven by a desire to make pregnancy safer for mothers and babies. Her research has focused on predicting and preventing pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, stillbirth, and gestational diabetes, as well as improving screening for fetal abnormalities. With the mentorship and support of Professor Nicolaides, she has contributed significantly to the field, publishing over 240 peer-reviewed papers in leading international journals, including four in The New England Journal of Medicine. Her work has had a lasting impact, with an h-index of 80, but what truly motivates her is the potential to translate research into real-world benefits for women and their babies.
