Support from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) helped an experienced midwife secure the correct Band 6 pay point after she was placed too low on the scale in a new role – highlighting the difference union support can make when members need it most.
The midwife was appointed to a new Band 6 post but was placed on the mid-point of the band, despite believing that, in line with Agenda for Change and her five years’ experience as a midwife, she should have been appointed at the top of the band.
After contacting the RCM for advice and support, a rep worked with the member to challenge the decision. By providing evidence of her years of experience and checking the relevant guidance the RCM helped secure a successful outcome, with the member uplifted to the top of the Band 6 pay scale.
The RCM member, who works at a trust in the North of England, said: “I’m so glad I joined the RCM. Their help was amazing, taking the lead on email correspondence between all parties, checking guidance and supporting me every step of the way. My RCM officer helped me from beginning to end, following up and checking in on me throughout the process. I am so grateful for her professional and caring support and advice.
“I’d advise any midwife to join the RCM, because you never know when you may need support during your career.”
Lynne Galvin, RCM Regional Head for North of England, said: “This case is a great example of the support RCM membership provides, helping members navigate workplace issues, stand up for what they’re entitled to and achieve fair outcomes.
“We’re delighted to have supported this member in securing the correct pay point in her new role. It’s important to us that our members are treated fairly, paid correctly and have expert advice when they need it most.”
The RCM supports members on a wide range of workplace issues, including pay, contracts and professional concerns.
Lynne added: “This successful outcome is also a reminder to members to seek advice if something doesn’t feel right. The RCM will always be there to support you and it can make all the difference.”
Notes to editors:
The current difference between the intermediate pay point in the current band 6 pay and the top pay point over a three-year period (which is how long it would take pay to progress to the top point) is £17,841 (source: Pay scales for 2026/27 | NHS Employers).
