International day of the midwife

How will you be celebrating IDM 2025?

IDM takes place on 5 May and is an occasion for every midwife to think about the many others in the profession, to make new contacts within and outside midwifery, and to widen the knowledge of what midwives do for the world.

The RCM is encouraging all RCM branches, Midsocs and members to work together to host local events in their workplaces.

The theme for this year is ā€˜Midwives: critical in every crisis.ā€™

Midwives: Critical in every crisis

Midwives play an essential role in supporting women every day. In this webinar, we explore the experiences of two midwives as they share their insights from working in Sudan and a war-torn region of Ukraine.

Celebration ideas

Putting together an event around Caring for You? Ā What about a staff wellbeing event? You may know a local specialist (masseur, beautician, yoga teacher) who will come and support an event. Ask your local beauty college to offer support.

You could use your branch funds to host an event for those in your Trust or Health Board. Here are some ideas:

  • Virtual seminar
  • Breakfast meeting
  • Lunch and learnt event
  • Tea party
  • Quiz night

The RCM may be able to provide a speaker for a number of different topics. There maybe local specialists, such as your research midwife, local charities and colleagues with particular interests or hobbies.

The RCM continues to look at ways to become more sustainable and reduce our carbon footprint. Therefore we will not be providing materials on storefront and encourage you to purchase materials from your branch funds. We advise that merchandise is confirmed and ordered at least six weeks prior to your event to take into account any specific print and delivery requirements. Remember your branch will have a its own RCM logo that can be added to products that you may wish to order. For example badges or stickers that members can wear. Ā Speak to your organiser if you want access to your branch logo.

Design and printing specification are available to on the running your branch webpage.
