Global midwifery: considering the practical issues

This module explores some of the practical issues involved in undertaking an international assignment. It offers insights to help you decide whether such assignments are appropriate for you and considers ways in which to best prepare for cross cultural professional activities. Insights gained through studying this module and the theoretical module which complements it could enhance practice in the UK as well as overseas.
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Identify key issues to consider before undertaking an overseas project, including
– Is it for me?
– What is the most appropriate project?
– What is the best way to help and engage? - Appreciate partnership working and the potential hazards of inappropriate engagement
- Understand the need for sustainability and capacity development
- Appreciate different models of care and understand the implications for different countries and cultures
- Appreciate the key issues around personal safety; keeping professionally up to date and the impact that volunteering may have on you as an individual
