Sophie Russell

RCM President

Sophie grew up in the west country and from a very young age knew she wanted to be a midwife. She moved to London for her training and has worked there clinically since 2006.

Sophie is currently the Head of Midwifery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, part of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Her career profile spans a variety of roles within community and hospital. This has included holding posts as a Consultant Midwife for five years and Associate Director for Quality and Safety for three years. The diverse roles in her portfolio have given her a unique and broad perspective on maternity services.

Outside of her substantive roles Sophie is a strong advocate for quality improvement and patient safety, particularly demonstrated through her subject matter advisory roles to MNSI and MBRRACE.

Sophie takes as keen interest in academia and research. She undertook her masterā€™s in medical Ethics and Law in 2012. She has contributed to national guidelines and mortality reviews, including the NICE Multiple Pregnancy Guideline update (2019) and the RCM pocket guide on caring for vulnerable migrant women.

Sophie lives in Southeast London with her husband and two small children who keep her equally as busy outside of work.
