IĀ became a midwife in 2000 and haveĀ hadĀ IĀ aĀ varied career in clinical practice, education,Ā leadershipĀ and research. I have held clinicalĀ postsĀ several differentĀ NHS Trusts, andĀ am now a Consultant Midwife based in London. I have been a universityĀ lecturer, andĀ have undertaken a Darzi Fellowship focusing on systems leadership. This variety of exposure has made me curious aboutĀ different aspectsĀ of UK maternity services: how they areĀ organisedĀ and run, howĀ organisationalĀ culture affects midwivesā work and feelings of confidence and autonomy, and how different outcomes experienced by women, babies and families are influenced by more than individual health factors.Ā Ā
I have conducted original research via Masters and DoctoralĀ studies. My MSc (completed in 2008) consisted of a quantitative survey of midwivesā confidence and competence in supporting women to have a physiologically unfolding third stage ofĀ labour. My PhD studies (thesisĀ submittedĀ in 2021) explored through qualitative caseĀ studyĀ how defining attributes of midwifery-led care were enacted in intrapartum midwifery-led settings.Ā
From thisĀ experiencedĀ I have knowledge of qualitative approaches, dataĀ collectionsĀ methods, and thematic analysis using the framework tool. Midwifery-led care, health inequalities, healthĀ service improvement are my topics of interest.Ā
