RCM Cymru has paid tribute to Stacey Keane, a much-loved midwife and activist, who has sadly died.
Stacey, from Cwm Taf Morgannwg, was at the forefront of the fight for fairness, dignity and justice in the workplace throughout her career. As a former RCM Workplace rep she stood alongside countless members – at the bargaining table, in negotiations and in one-to-one support for colleagues facing the most difficult of circumstances.
Julie Richards, RCM Cymru Director, said: “Stacey’s unwavering commitment, courage and compassion left an indelible mark on the RCM and on maternity services across Wales.
“Her achievements were not measured solely in agreements won or disputes settled, but in the countless members whose working lives were better because of her.”
Stacey was pivotal in pay negotiations, member support and wellbeing across Wales and the Channel Islands. She was a strong and determined voice throughout the pay campaign and was committed to building the branch, supporting members and investing in the next generation of activists.
Her work developing fellow activists helped members build confidence, find their voice and take on representative roles within the union.
She was also part of the group behind Midwives in Mind, a social media wellbeing initiative designed to support the mental health of midwives and maternity support workers, created as part of the Midwifery Leadership Group – contributing to vital conversations about how the profession is valued and supported.
Before she passed away, Stacey was presented with a Special Recognition Award in honour of her extraordinary contribution.
Julie added: “What made Stacey exceptional was not just what she campaigned for, but how she went about it – with integrity, generosity and a genuine belief in the power of collective action.
“She gave so much to the RCM and to the members who needed her most. We were so pleased to be able to honour her with a Special Recognition Award before she passed away, so she knew just how much she meant to us and the impact she had made on RCM Cymru.
