This module explores the huge changes in the role of women, families and the ongoing impact on society, and the implications for midwifery and maternity care. The module provides an update on the key changes, and activities around statistics, including normal and caesarean birth; issues around teenage and vulnerable women, and how the midwife can navigate the politics and power issues that might face her.
After completing this course you will be able to:
- Discuss the trends in childbirth statistics and highlight how changes over the past 50 years have shaped care
- Develop a greater understanding of the diverse cultures in midwifery care in the UK and explore personal values and beliefs
- Understand how the developments in medical and midwifery care has impacted on women’s reproductive health
- Understand the role of women in contemporary society
