Promoting dignity, respectful and compassionate care in midwifery practice

Course Access: Lifetime
Course Overview

Compassion in practice, previously known as the ‘6Cs’, was an NHS campaign to raise awareness of dignity in care across the service. Though the values of compassionate care, dignity and respect are expected to be fundamental, there have been recent examples where this has not been the case. The inquiry into care at the Mid Staffordshire Trust and accounts of poor and unsafe practice in some birth centres, such as Morecambe Bay, Shrewsbury and Cwm Taf have all raised questions about how women and families are treated in some areas.

This short i-learn module is designed to help you to develop your knowledge about personalised compassionate care in midwifery practice which promotes dignity and respect. The module will encourage individual reflection on your practice.

When you have completed this short module, you will have:

  • Knowledge of relevant policy documents relevant to providing dignified respectful and compassionate care
  • Developed understanding of the underpinning philosophy of midwifery practice
