Midwives across Wales are being offered the opportunity to learn Welsh, with a brand new course developed specifically for the profession.

Julie Richards, RCM Cymru Director, launching the partnership at Eisteddfod.

The course will give midwives the practical language and confidence to use Welsh in everyday practice – from greeting a woman on her first appointment to supporting her through labour and beyond.

It’s designed to fit around a midwife’s working life and will be promoted to the more than 2,000 midwives working across Wales.

The course is launching as part of a partnership between the RCM and the National Centre for Learning Welsh.

Midwives will get hands-on tools to use on shift straight away, including lanyard cards featuring everyday greetings and phrases, so midwives can start bringing more Welsh into their day-to-day care from day one.

Julie Richards, Director of the Royal College of Midwives in Wales, said: “Midwives support women and their families through some of the most important moments of their lives and being able to use Welsh when providing care can make a real difference to people’s experiences.

“We’ll be encouraging more midwives across Wales to develop their Welsh language skills and take advantage of these new opportunities, thanks to our partnership with the National Centre.”

Midwives will be able to draw on the National Centre’s broader Health and Social Care provision too, including a dedicated Learn Welsh tutor in every health board and a range of online courses and digital learning.

Dona Lewis, Chief Executive of the National Centre for Learning Welsh, said: “We’re delighted to be working with the Royal College of Midwives on this latest programme.

“Through tailored, relevant learning materials and our flexible training, we aim to help midwives develop their skills and gain confidence to use Welsh in their work.”

The partnership is the latest in a series the National Centre has developed with health-sector bodies, following similar work with the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Macmillan Cancer Support and supports the Welsh Government’s More than just words framework for strengthening Welsh-language health and care services.

It was officially launched on Monday 3 August at the ‘More than Words’ stand at Eisteddfod y Garreg Las, with Julie Richards and Dona Lewis in attendance.
