A message to all RCM members from our Chief Executive

As the year comes to a close, our Chief Executive Gill Walton has a message for Royal College of Midwives members. It is a moment to reflect on the challenges of the past year, to recognise the extraordinary work happening across maternity services every day, and to say thank you to those who continue to care for women, babies and families under immense pressure.

As 2025 draws to a close, I want to take a moment to speak directly to you: our midwives, maternity support workers, students, and educators.

This year has been exceptionally demanding. We know that many of you have been navigating a path through intense pressure, facing staffing gaps and a system that often feels at odds with the high standard of care you strive to provide. It is important to acknowledge the weight of that experience. Please hear this clearly: when the day feels impossible, it is not a reflection of your worth or your skill. You are holding together a system that is under so much pressure.

Despite these hurdles, you have been the light for so many families. Through your hands and your words, most women continue to have exceptional experiences during their most transformative moments. Your commitment to safety, advocacy, and compassion is nothing short of extraordinary. You should feel immense pride in the care you deliver, even on the days when you feel most depleted.

To those of you who will be working through the festive period – missing time with your own loved ones to care for others – we see you and we thank you. You ensure that women and babies are safe and supported while the rest of the world pauses.

Throughout this year, the RCM has been guided by your voices. Your lived experiences shape our priorities and fuel our resolve. As we look toward 2026, we are more determined than ever to be your strongest advocate. We will continue to push for the respect, staffing levels, and working conditions you deserve, standing firmly behind the vital role of the midwife.

Thank you for everything you give to your profession. Whether you are working or taking a well-earned rest, I wish you a Merry Christmas, moments of peace, and a hopeful start to the New Year.
