The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Cymru has welcomed the introduction of baby loss certificates for parents in Wales who have experienced the loss of a baby before 24 weeks.
Until now, the certificates have only been available to parents in England, where they were introduced last year. The scheme, which is voluntary, allows parents to request a certificate which recognises the loss of their baby.
Today, the Welsh Government has announced that the scheme will now be available to parents in Wales, with the Welsh certificate being bilingual.
Julie Richards, Director of RCM Cymru, said:
“This is a really important and compassionate step forward for parents in Wales who experience the devastating loss of a baby before 24 weeks. Recognising their babies with a certificate can bring comfort and validation at an incredibly difficult time. It’s really positive that Wales has now followed England in introducing this scheme, ensuring families in Wales are offered the same recognition and compassion.
“It’s particularly meaningful that this is being introduced during Baby Loss Awareness Week, a time when we can reflect, remember and work to improve care for bereaved families.”
The RCM has produced a webinar to better support its members with bereavement care.
