What does an activist do?

What does 'activist' mean?

An activist is a generic term for any member who holds an elected role at a local level. This includes the statutory roles of workplace steward, health and safety representative and learning representative.

activist roles in the branch

In addition to workplace activists, there are roles within the branch such as chair secretary and treasurer, student officer, social media officer, international midwives officer and maternity support worker advocate. These are open to all members, and activists can volunteer as much or as little as they choose.

The RCM branch has a number of roles: to connect and support members, to give them a voice at work and to provide employment advice and development opportunities.

revalidating and cpd

Workplace activitists have specific roles – for example an RCM learning rep will make sure the employer meets their NMC revalidation obligation to provide continuing professional development opportunities. They may even organisse these according to local need.

member engagement

Activists listen and repsond to members to build a better understanding of any workplace issues or needs, or any individual problems. Activist also organise branch activity according to local requests – anything from celebrations to learning events.
