RCM urges members in Wales to have their say on pay award

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) is calling on all its members working in NHS in Wales to have their say on the 5.5% pay award announced by Wales First Minister Eluned Morgan earlier this month. The call comes as the RCM today opens a two-week consultation with midwives and maternity support workers (MSWs) in Wales.

The RCM says it’s pleased the award is above inflation which meets the asks set out in its pay claim and that it’s on a par with what midwives and MSWs will receive in England.

Commenting, the RCM’s National Officer for Wales, Vicky Richards, said:

“It’s crucial that we gauge the views of all our members on this overdue pay award. So, we are calling on all our Agenda for Change members in Wales to respond to this important consultation. It has taken months of lobbying and pressure from the RCM to get to this stage and our members have waited long enough to receive this award. We really do want to see this pay increase in our members’ pockets soon.”

The consultation opens today (23 September) and runs for two weeks, closing at midnight on 7 October. The RCM is encouraging its members not to delay in making their voices heard. It says members will receive a link to the survey directly via email today and it takes less than two minutes to take part.

Vicky added:

“In our pay claim we also demanded a commitment to the real living wage, a consolidated pay increase and a commitment to a credible plan to restore the pay lost by NHS staff. So, we are happy that this award will be consolidated across the Board. It’s now down to our members to decide if this is acceptable. The views of all our members in Wales matter to us and will inform our next steps, so please do respond to our quick survey and encourage your colleagues employed under Agenda for Change in Wales to do the same.”

The RCM has developed FAQs for its members on this award and you can find out what it means to you, plus more information here on the RCM’s new website. If you’ve not received an email with a link to the consultation, you can complete the survey here.
