Overview

We invite you to join the next session of the Midwives‑in‑Training Research & Journal Review Club (MITRJRC), where we will be focusing on perinatal mental health services and how student midwives can prepare for practice in this vital area.

This session features guest speaker Josephine Lane, an experienced perinatal mental health midwife with over 15 years’ experience across nursing and midwifery. Josephine has worked exclusively in perinatal mental health for the past four years, grounding her practice in compassionate, evidence‑based care. Her work emphasises advocacy, early intervention, and holistic support for women and families navigating mental health challenges during the perinatal period.

In recognition of her significant impact, Josephine received the Royal College of Midwives’ award for Outstanding Contribution to Perinatal Mental Health this year.

During this session, Josephine will explore:

  • How student midwives can effectively prepare for perinatal mental health clinics
  • Approaches to supporting women experiencing symptoms of declining perinatal mental health
  • Navigating the emotional and professional impact of caring for women in distress
  • The importance of reflective practice, resilience, and seeking support

Hosted by Michelle McKay, the event will include:

  • A presentation from Josephine
  • Group discussion with fellow students
  • A Q&A session to deepen understanding and explore real‑life scenarios

This is a valuable opportunity to learn from a leading practitioner and to strengthen your confidence and preparedness for practice in perinatal mental health.
