Many women who are obese when they become pregnant have no problems in pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby. However we do know that heavier women are more at risk of pregnancy complications than women who are a healthy weight. This module looks at the issues affecting obese women in pregnancy and provides opportunities for reflection and consolidation of learning through a variety of activities.
By the end of this module you will have:
- have an increased awareness and understanding of maternal obesity as a significant condition during pregnancy and childbirth,
- be able to identify and increase awareness of the short and long term consequences of obesity and excess weight gain in pregnant women and their infants,
- be able to identify current national and international guidelines for appropriate weight gain in pregnancy,
- To understand the importance of a healthy diet and physical activity in maternal weight management,
- To be able to advise on strategies for evidence-based healthy eating and safe weight management during pregnancy,
