Global midwifery: considering the theoretical issues
This course explores some of the theoretical issues surrounding global midwifery and offers a complementary study to the i-learn module providing practical assistance in preparing for an overseas assignment. It should also be of interest to midwives who do not intend working overseas, as it will provide insights to help you appreciate the global situation in the context of midwifery. In a world which seems to become ever smaller, insights gained through studying this module could enhance practice in the UK as well as overseas.
After completing this module you will have a better understanding of midwifery in a global context and be able to:
- Discuss and reflect on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Identify key health policy drivers, reports and evidence and the stakeholders, organisations and personnel who are pivotal in improving global maternity and newborn health
- Appreciate the role that midwives play in the development of services, reducing preventable mortality and morbidity in maternity care
- Understand the designated best and worst places to become a mother and explore how best midwives can be involved in improving outcomes for women globally
