The provision of inclusive maternity and perinatal care for all individuals, regardless of protected characteristics including sexuality, is essential. Despite this clear need for equitable care, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual+ (LGBTQIA+) population still faces many unique barriers. Inclusive terminology, welcoming environments and practitioner education, starting on programmes leading to midwifery registration and continuing thereafter, are vital to ensure that disclosures of sexuality can be made, and equitable and personalised care provided to women and birthing people. This article provides an overview of LGBTQIA+ key issues in the UK context, challenges to overcome and how the midwifery education team at the University of York operationalises inclusive education.
