Optimising warm compress during birth: a quality improvement project

Jennifer Prescot

Abstract

Perineal warm compress during birth is effective at reducing obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASI) during childbirth (Fadlalmola et al 2023). This quality improvement project evaluated different methods of providing warm compress during birth. Staff evaluated using thermal jugs, warm water and swab, a ‘crack and heat’ warm compress (KoolPak) and a disposable hot water bottle (Curapax). Using a thermal jug to store warm water was found to be a convenient and cost-effective method of providing warm compress in a labour ward and a birth centre setting.
