The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is launching a new Senior Research Leader Programme for nurses and midwives.
The three-year programme aims to promote the undiscovered potential of senior nurses and midwives when it comes to research capacity and capability.
In a news item on the NIHR website, NIHR Associate Director of Nursing and Senior Research Leader Programme Director, Dr Catherine Henshall, said: “Research-active organisations achieve better clinical outcomes for patients and are more likely to retain their workforce. But, the professions with the most contact with patients and the public – nurses and midwives – have had limited opportunity to influence the research culture in their organisations.”
This programme will be building on the achievements seen by the 70@70 Senior Nurse and Midwife Leaders Programme, which ended in March 2022, reaching at least 3,000 nurses and midwives across various parts of the health and care delivery system.
The result of this programme saw increased collaboration between clinical academics and lead research delivery nurses and midwives.
“The 70@70 programme was set up to give nurses and midwives the opportunity to help shape the research culture within their organisations and at a national level. Senior nurses and midwives were given the time to spend two days a week working on research capacity and capability building initiatives, utilising their expertise and applying their knowledge and skills to support and develop other nurses and midwives within their organisations,” Dr Catherine Henshall added.
Applications are now open and will close at 1pm Monday 24 October 2022.
Successful applicants will start the programme in April 2023 until March 2026. The programme will be running on an annual basis with 15 nurses and midwives recruited per cohort.
