This short course explores the role of the midwife in a changing health service alongside the demands and expectations of service users. As you move through this course it will address some of the social, political and economic drivers that impact on the midwife’s scope of practice.
By working through this course you will begin to:
- examine the role of a practising midwife in the changing society
- explore the impact of social political and economic drivers on midwifery practice and the midwife’s role
- become aware of effects of pre-existing ill health on outcomes of childbirth
- evaluate the effects of advances in medical and midwifery knowledge and technology on reproductive health and childbearing
- recognise the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to practise confidently and competently
- demonstrate an understanding of the multifactorial nature of complex midwifery and recognise the challenges related to risk
- recognise the midwife’s role in supporting women and families dealing with morbidity and mortality
